Codex Holmiensis

Codex Holmiensis is the oldest surviving manuscript of the Jyske Lov, or Code of Jutland, a regional Danish civil code enacted by King Valdemar II at Vordingborg Castle in early 1241 for Jutland, Funen and Schleswig. The manuscript itself dates to around 1350 and is written in Danish; it is held today at the Royal Library in Copenhagen. The code is remembered for its prologue's declaration that with law shall the land be built, and that law should be honest, just and reasonable, serving the needs of the whole people rather than any one person's favor.
