Church Statute of Prince Vladimir

The Church Statute of Prince Vladimir, also called the Statute of Prince Volodimir, is a source of church law in Old Rus that defined the legal authority of the church and the legal status of the clergy in relation to the state, meaning the prince and his administration. The Vladimir Statute was a short legal code that regulated the relationship between church and state, including the boundary of jurisdiction between church and princely courts, and it also placed the system of weights and measures, along with a monthly tithe from princely income, under church supervision. The statute was written at the beginning of the twelfth century in Old Church Slavonic and Old East Slavic and was revised over the following centuries; it was one of the earliest church sources of Kievan Rus law, alongside the closely related Church Statute of Prince Yaroslav and other princely statutes, and it drew in part on Byzantine law, including the Kormchaia, itself derived from a Byzantine nomocanon.
