Brokmerbrief

The Brokmerbrief is an early 13th-century law code from Brokmerland, a region west of Aurich in East Frisia, governing its inhabitants, the brocmanni. It is considered the most comprehensive surviving source on Old Frisian law and, unlike most other Frisian legal documents, is a genuine code of law rather than a compilation of customs. Political and judicial authority under the code rested with annually elected farmer-officials called redjeven, and the law's ban on fortified stone residences and castles is credited with keeping feudalism from taking root in the region. Two manuscript copies survive, held in archives in Oldenburg and Hanover.
