Ivo of Chartres

Ivo of Chartres (c. 1040-1115) was a French canon regular and abbot who became bishop of Chartres in 1090 and remained an important authority in Catholic canon law during the Investiture Crisis. He authored three major canonical compilations, the Decretum, the Tripartita and the Panormia, along with 288 letters and 25 sermons on liturgical, canonical and theological matters. His approach emphasized charity as central to interpreting canon law, arguing against harsh punishment without genuine contrition, and his writings influenced the Decretum of Gratian and the Sic et Non of Peter Abelard; some scholars credit his doctrines with shaping the 1122 Concordat of Worms.
