Giorgio Del Vecchio was an Italian legal philosopher who shaped twentieth-century jurisprudence through a Neo-Kantian approach to the philosophy of law. He held professorships at several Italian universities, served as rector of the University of Rome, and founded the International Journal of Philosophy of Law. Del Vecchio argued that law could not be understood merely by observing legal phenomena as they exist, proposing instead that legal philosophy must pursue logical, phenomenological and ontological inquiry to grasp the nature of law and justice. His book Justice was especially influential, shaping the work of later theorists including the Italian legal philosopher Norberto Bobbio.
