Abu Jafar Ahmad al-Tahawi (853-933) was an Egyptian Arab Islamic scholar of the Abbasid era and a foundational figure in Hanafi jurisprudence, having trained first under the Shafii school before switching to the Hanafi madhhab around age twenty. He was described by contemporaries as the most learned jurist among the Hanafis in Egypt despite his knowledge of the other schools. He is best known for al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah, a widely commented summary of Sunni creed, and for hadith commentaries including Sharh Maani al-Athar.
