Chaim Perelman (1912 to 1984) was a Belgian philosopher of Polish Jewish origin who became one of the twentieth century leading theorists of legal argumentation. Born Henio Perelman in Warsaw, he emigrated to Belgium in 1925 and spent his career at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles. With Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca he wrote Traite de l argumentation, la nouvelle rhetorique in 1958, translated as The New Rhetoric, which developed a framework for evaluating legal and other arguments by their persuasiveness to an audience rather than by formal logic alone.
