Al-Ghazali

Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence

Al-Ghazali (c. 1058-1111) was a Persian scholar of the Islamic Golden Age and a jurist of the Shafii school of Islamic jurisprudence, trained also in Ashari theology. He is known as one of the most prominent and influential jurisconsults, legal theoreticians, muftis, philosophers, theologians, logicians and mystics in Islamic history, and received the honorific title Hujjat al-Islam, Proof of Islam. His critique of Greek philosophy in The Incoherence of the Philosophers marked a major turn in Islamic thought, and his work The Revival of the Religious Sciences became one of the most widely read texts in the Islamic world after the Quran and hadith.
