Abu Bakr al-Baqillani (950-1013) was a Sunni Muslim scholar from Basra, a jurist of the Maliki school and a theologian of the Ashari school, described by Ibn Taymiyya as the best of the Ashari theologians. He served as chief judge, qadi, in Baghdad and was known as a skilled debater, once representing the Amir at the Byzantine court in Constantinople around 981 to debate Christian scholars. He is credited with roughly 55 works addressing theological and legal matters, and he substantially strengthened the Ashari school standing.
