Paul Laband was a German jurist, born in 1838 and dying in 1918, regarded as the leading authority on public law following German unification in 1871. Building on the work of Carl Friedrich Gerber, he applied the methods of Pandectist legal science to constitutional law, developing a rigorous legal formalism. His major work, Das Staatsrecht des Deutschen Reiches, reprinted five times between 1876 and 1914, became the most influential account of German constitutional law of the Wilhelmine era and established him as the founder of a school of public-law scholarship that dominated German legal academia into the Weimar period.
