Frederick Franklin Schauer (1946-2024) was an American legal scholar who held the David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professorship of Law at the University of Virginia and the Frank Stanton Professorship of the First Amendment at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. His work centered on American constitutional law, especially freedom of expression, and on the philosophical foundations of legal reasoning, including the nature and value of legal formalism and how restrictions on speech can lead governments to make worse policy by cutting themselves off from critical feedback. His 1982 book Free Speech: A Philosophical Enquiry argued along these lines, and he held degrees from Dartmouth College, Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business and Harvard Law School. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia, of renal disease at the age of seventy eight.
