Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani

Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (922-996) was a Muslim scholar of Kairouan in present day Tunisia and a jurist of the Maliki school, an influential proponent of Ashari theology who served as imam of a Maliki mosque in Kairouan. He is best known for al-Risala, an instructional epistle on Maliki law and practice written for teaching, which became a standard primer of Maliki jurisprudence. He also defended Ashari doctrine against Mutazili critiques and traced his scholarly lineage to Abu al-Hasan al-Ashari.
