Ubadah ibn al-Samit was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and a respected chieftain of the Ansar who fought in nearly every battle of Muhammad's era, including at Badr, and later led the conquest of Cyprus as one of the most successful commanders of the Rashidun army. He served under the first three Rashidun caliphs in campaigns against the Byzantine Empire, ended his military career as a qadi, or judge, in the Holy Land, and later assisted Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan, governor of Syria and future founder of the Umayyad Caliphate.
