Ulfljotr

Ulfljotr, active around 927 to 930, is regarded by some as Iceland first lawspeaker. A group of Icelandic chieftains sent him to Norway for approximately three years to study Norwegian law and custom, and on his return he drew on that study to establish a legal framework for the new settlement. The law code that resulted, known as Ulfljot Law, was the first law enacted at the founding assembly of the Althing. While he was in Norway, his half-brother Grimur Geitskor surveyed Iceland to locate the site later chosen for the Althing itself, and Ulfljotr is commemorated today through Ulfljotsvatn, a lake named for him, and the Ulfljotur Law Review.
