Ibrahim al-Nakha'i

Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence

Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, born around 666 and dying in 714, both in Kufa, was an early Kufan jurist of the tabi'in generation and a pioneer of the use of ra'y and qiyas, independent and analogical reasoning, in Islamic law. He taught in the Great Mosque of Kufa, and after his death his student Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman became the leader of his study circle, a lineage that went on to influence Abu Hanifa and the Hanafi school of jurisprudence he founded. Al-Nakha'i maintained a strained relationship with the Umayyad authorities, openly criticizing officials and supporting certain revolts against them, which at times forced him into hiding.
