Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim al-Utaqi, known as Ibn al-Qasim (c. 750-806), was a prominent early jurist of the Maliki school of Islamic law in Egypt. As one of Malik ibn Anas's principal companions, he played a major role in recording and transmitting the school's legal positions, and his rulings became the source Sahnun drew on for the Mudawwana, the foundational compilation of Maliki law. He held the same transmitting and interpretive role within the Maliki school that Muhammad al-Shaybani held within the Hanafi school, making free use of independent legal reasoning even where his own opinions diverged from Malik's.
