Ibn Nujaym

Zayn al-Din Ibn Nujaym was a Hanafi jurist born in 1520 in Cairo, where he studied under leading Hanafi scholars and later taught Islamic law himself until his death around 1563. He began Al-Bahr al-Raiq, an extensive commentary on al-Nasafi's Kanz al-Daqaiq, but completed only its early chapters, up to the chapter on leasing, before his death, leaving later scholars to finish it. His other major work, Al-Ashbah wa'l-Nazair, Similar and Parallel Cases, set out the underlying legal maxims and principles of Hanafi jurisprudence following a methodology drawn from the earlier Shafii scholar Taj al-Din al-Subki, and it became a standard reference within the Hanafi school, generating numerous later commentaries of its own.
