Ecgbert of York

Also Known As Egbert; Egberht; Ecgberht
Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence

Ecgbert (died 19 November 766) served as Archbishop of York from 735 until his death, having received the pallium from Pope Gregory III that year, and is remembered as one of the great architects of the English church in the eighth century. He founded a school at York whose library was described by contemporaries as unequalled in western Europe at the time, and counted the scholar Alcuin among its students. His Dialogus ecclesiasticae institutionis is a legal code for the clergy, addressing procedures for ordination and deposition, weregild owed for clerics, and monastic discipline; several other texts once attributed to him, including a penitential and a pontifical, are considered inauthentic by modern scholars.
