Franz von Benda-Beckmann (1941 to 2013) was a legal anthropologist whose scholarship on property rights, social security and legal pluralism in developing countries helped make legal pluralism a central concept in the anthropology of law. In 2000 he and his wife Keebet von Benda-Beckmann moved to Halle to found and lead a Law, Organisation and Social Change project group at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, and he co-founded the International Commission on Legal Pluralism of the International Union of Ethnological and Anthropological Sciences. He was later named Honorary Professor of Ethnology at Leipzig University and Honorary Professor of Legal Pluralism at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
