Zayd ibn Ali lived from 695 to 740 and was an Alid political and religious leader, a great-grandson of Ali ibn Abi Talib, who authored works on Islamic jurisprudence including texts reflecting the early Kufan legal tradition. He led an unsuccessful revolt against the Umayyad Caliphate in which he was killed, and his uprising directly inspired the Zaydiyya branch of Shia Islam, which regards him as the rightful Imam after his father. The prominent Sunni jurist Abu Hanifa issued a fatwa in support of Zayd against the Umayyads, and the public display of Zayd's body after his death helped fuel the anger that contributed to the Abbasid Revolution.
