Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence

Maimonides, born Moses ben Maimon in Cordoba around 1135 or 1138, was a Sephardic rabbinic scholar whose family fled the city after the Almohad conquest of 1148 rather than convert to Islam, eventually settling in Fustat, Egypt, by about 1171, where he served as personal physician to Saladin and led the local Jewish community until his death in 1204. Between 1170 and 1180 he composed the Mishneh Torah, a fourteen book code that organized the entire body of Jewish law into a single systematic work written in clear Hebrew rather than the discursive style of the Talmud, letting a reader reach a practical ruling without first working through the underlying arguments. The Mishneh Torah's comprehensive, code-like structure made it one of the most influential works in the history of Jewish law, shaping how later codifiers such as Jacob ben Asher and Joseph Karo organized their own compilations even where they departed from Maimonides's specific rulings. Maimonides was also one of the leading Jewish philosophers of the Middle Ages, and his separate philosophical work The Guide for the Perplexed argued for reconciling Aristotelian philosophy with Jewish scripture, but it is the Mishneh Torah's systematic codification that establishes him as a foundational figure in the history of Jewish law specifically.
