Ibn Abi al-Izz

Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence

Ibn Abi al-Izz (1331-1390) was a fourteenth century Arab Muslim jurist of the Hanafi school and adherent of Athari theology who served as a qadi, judge, in both Damascus and Egypt, earning the honorific Qadi al-Qudah, Judge of Judges. He is best remembered for his extensive commentary on al-Tahawi creedal treatise al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah. Although from a prominent Hanafi family, he refused to follow any one legal school uncritically, insisting scholarly opinions be weighed against the Quran and Sunnah, a position that led to his imprisonment for fourteen months in 1382.
