Braulio of Zaragoza

Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence

Braulio (circa 585 to circa 651) served as Bishop of Zaragoza from 631 until his death, succeeding his brother John, and was remembered as one of the most celebrated saints of the Visigothic Kingdom and an advisor to several Visigothic kings. He collaborated closely with Isidore of Seville on the conversion of the Visigoths from Arianism, and after Isidore death organized his encyclopedic Etymologiae into its twenty-book form, giving it the working title Quaecunque fere sciri debentur, roughly meaning practically everything it is necessary to know. Braulio participated in the Councils of Toledo of 633, 636 and 638, which issued significant ecclesiastical and civil legislation for the Visigothic kingdom, and corresponded with Pope Honorius I on behalf of Iberian clergy regarding church discipline.
