Nicolas Politis

Natural Law and International Law Founders

Nicolas Politis was a Greek jurist, diplomat and statesman who lived from 1872 to 1942, born in Corfu and educated in law before teaching international law at the universities of Paris and Aix. A close political ally of Eleftherios Venizelos, he represented Greece as a delegate to the London Conference of 1912 to 1913 and served as Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1916 to 1920 and again in 1922, later representing Greece at the League of Nations and serving as Greek minister plenipotentiary in Paris from 1935. He signed the Politis-Kalfov Protocol settling a dispute between Greece and Bulgaria, promoted a disarmament resolution before the League of Nations Disarmament Commission, and worked alongside the Soviet commissar Maxim Litvinov on the 1933 Convention on the Definition of Aggression. His scholarly works include Les Emprunts d'Etat en Droit International of 1894 and later writings on the limitation of state sovereignty, and he also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee from 1930 to 1933.
