Alf Niels Christian Ross lived from 1899 to 1979 and was a Danish jurist, legal philosopher and judge of the European Court of Human Rights from 1959 to 1971. He is best known as one of the leading figures of Scandinavian legal realism, and his 1959 debate with the prominent British legal philosopher H. L. A. Hart, which began in the Cambridge Law Journal, was important in framing the modern conflict between legal positivism and legal realism.

What did Alf Ross argue about legal rules and natural law?
He saw a legal rule as a directive addressed to judges and rejected natural law as arbitrary.
In his best known book On Law and Justice, first published in Danish in 1953 as Om Ret og Retfærdighed, Alf Ross held that law has no a priori validity and that experience is the guide. He wrote that a legal rule is neither true nor false but a directive, and that the norm is directed at judges rather than citizens. He opposed natural law approaches, arguing that no ideology exists that cannot be defended by an appeal to the law of nature, because the basis of every natural right lies in a private intuition.
