Abu Jafar Ahmad al-Tahawi (853-933) was an Egyptian Arab Islamic scholar of the Abbasid era and a foundational figure in Hanafi jurisprudence, having trained first under the Shafii school before switching to the Hanafi madhhab around age twenty. He was described by contemporaries as the most learned jurist among the Hanafis in Egypt despite his knowledge of the other schools. He is best known for al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah, a widely commented summary of Sunni creed, and for hadith commentaries including Sharh Maani al-Athar.

Why did al-Tahawi leave the Shafii school for the Hanafi school?
He left the Shafii school around age twenty because the system of Abu Hanifa appealed more to his critical insight.
Al-Tahawi began his studies with his maternal uncle Ismail ibn Yahya al-Muzani, a leading disciple of al-Shafii. In 873, at about twenty years of age, he abandoned the Shafii school of jurisprudence in favour of the Hanafi school. His biographers give different versions of the conversion, but the most probable reason seems to be that the system of Abu Hanifa appealed to his critical insight more than that of al-Shafii.
