Licinius Rufinus

Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Marcus Gnaeus Licinius Rufinus was a Roman senator, imperial official and legal scholar who flourished around 210 to 240 AD, probably born in the mid-180s. Originally from Thyateira in Lydia, he held a series of secretarial posts under the emperors and governed the province of Noricum, and in 238 AD he was one of twenty senators the Senate placed in charge of organizing resistance against the invasion of Italy by Maximinus Thrax. His legal treatise, the Regulae, survives only in fragments preserved in Justinian's Digest, and most of what is known of his career comes from honorific inscriptions found in his home city and other Greek cities.
