Wulfstan was an English archbishop and legal writer who served as Bishop of London from 996 to 1002, Bishop of Worcester from 1002 to 1016, and Archbishop of York from 1002 until his death in 1023. He personally drafted the royal law codes issued under King Aethelred the Unready between 1005 and 1016, and after Cnut the Great conquered England in 1016 he became a trusted advisor to the new king. His most significant legal achievement was the law code Cnut issued at Winchester around 1021, which remained influential for centuries and was later remembered as the law of King Edward. Alongside this legislative work he wrote roughly thirty Old English sermons, the best known being the Sermo Lupi ad Anglos of 1014, a homily that blamed the moral failings of the English for the Viking attacks then ravaging the country. He died on 28 May 1023 at York and was buried at Ely Cathedral.
