Robert Stout (1844-1930) was a New Zealand politician and jurist, born in Lerwick, Scotland, who served twice as Premier of New Zealand, briefly in 1884 and again from 1884 to 1887, before becoming the fourth Chief Justice of New Zealand from 1899 to 1926, the only person to have held both offices. He was known for championing liberal causes, particularly women's suffrage and land reform, and his government carried out civil service reform, expanded secondary education and built the Midland railway line. After leaving politics he served as Chancellor of the University of New Zealand from 1903 to 1923. He died in Wellington in 1930.
