Sir Edwin Chadwick was an English social reformer who lived from 1800 to 1890 and remained active in public policy into old age. With Nassau William Senior he drafted the 1834 report that recommended reforming England's poor relief system, leading to the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, which consolidated parishes into Poor Law Unions each centered on a workhouse; Chadwick himself favored a more centralized system of salaried officers than the act actually created. His later report on the sanitary condition of the labouring population led to the Public Health Act 1848, the first British statute to make the government responsible for public health, and he served as a commissioner on the General Board of Health the act established, pressing for glazed sewer pipes, a constant water supply and arterial drainage. He is also live on the health atlas (figure type) for the same sanitary-reform work seen from that atlas own charter; this jurist entry covers his statute-authoring facet under law own DataBrief scope.
