Thomas Bingham, Baron Bingham of Cornhill

Common Law Founders and Commentators

Thomas Henry Bingham, Baron Bingham of Cornhill (13 October 1933 to 11 September 2010) was a British judge who held, in succession, three of the highest judicial offices in England and Wales: Master of the Rolls from 1992 to 1996, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 1996 to 2000, and Senior Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 2000 to 2008. Widely described on his death as the greatest judge of his generation, he is particularly remembered for advocating the creation of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, established shortly after his retirement, and after leaving the bench in 2008 he devoted himself to writing and teaching on human rights and the rule of law. His book The Rule of Law, published in 2010, won the Orwell Prize for Literature the following year, and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law later established the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law in his honor.
