Hermogenianus

Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Hermogenianus, also known as Aurelius Hermogenianus, was a Roman jurist and legal administrator active under the emperor Diocletian in the late third century CE. He served as magister libellorum from about 293 to 295 and later as praetorian prefect before becoming proconsul of Asia. Hermogenianus compiled the Codex Hermogenianus, a collection of imperial rescripts from 293 and 294 that supplemented the earlier Codex Gregorianus, and he also wrote the Iuris epitomae, a six-book legal manual of which 106 excerpts survive in Justinian's Digest. He has been described as the first Roman lawyer to attempt to reduce the law to a small number of basic principles, and his work influenced Justinian's later codification.
