Titius Aristo

Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Titius Aristo was a Roman jurist who was active under the emperor Trajan in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. He was a close friend of Pliny the Younger, who described him in a letter as an excellent man and a profound scholar, thoroughly versed in both private and public law and steeped in ancient legal learning. Aristo followed Stoic philosophy and, while generally associated with the Proculian school of Roman jurisprudence, is recorded as sometimes siding with the rival Sabinian school in individual disputes rather than following his own school by rote. His surviving legal opinions, transmitted through citation by later jurists into Justinian's Digest, include notes on the writings of Marcus Antistius Labeo and Masurius Sabinus and a commentary responding to the jurist Cassius, and later tradition attributes to him a treatise called Decreta Frontianis, though its exact nature and other works ascribed to him remain uncertain.
