Special Court for Sierra Leone

International and Supranational Courts and Tribunals

The Special Court for Sierra Leone was a judicial institution jointly established by the government of Sierra Leone and the United Nations to try those bearing the greatest responsibility for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed during the country's civil conflict after 30 November 1996. It operated from its founding on 16 January 2002 until its dissolution on 2 December 2013, hearing cases against military and rebel leaders on charges of crimes against humanity, war crimes, and violations of international humanitarian law, and it was based in Freetown with additional offices in The Hague and New York City. A successor body, the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone, was created to carry on remaining functions such as witness protection and the supervision of sentences after the original court closed.
