Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, born September 12, 1948, in Eyl, Puntland, Somalia, is a Somali jurist. He earned a law degree from the Somali National University and a doctorate in international law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, with further postgraduate study at the University of Florence. He was appointed a judge of the International Court of Justice on February 6, 2009, elected its Vice-President on February 6, 2015, and elevated to President on February 6, 2018, becoming the first Somali and the third African to hold that office, after Nigerian and Algerian predecessors. He announced his resignation from the court effective September 30, 2025.
