Hector Fix-Zamudio

Hector Fix-Zamudio was a Mexican legal scholar and jurist who lived from 1924 to 2021. He earned his law degree from Mexico's National Autonomous University in 1956 and his doctorate in 1972, worked in the Mexican judiciary, and then joined the university's Legal Research Institute in 1964, directing it from 1966 to 1978. Fix-Zamudio served as a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 1987 to 1997, holding the court's presidency during two separate terms, and his scholarship on amparo proceedings, constitutional law and human rights protection, spanning twenty books and roughly two hundred fifty articles, made him one of the most influential legal academics in Latin America. He founded and led the Ibero-American Constitutional Law Institute from 1974 until 2002 and served on the United Nations Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination from 1998 to 2001.
