Stephen Myron Schwebel was an American jurist who lived from 10 March 1929 to 9 April 2026, born in New York City. He worked as a lawyer at White and Case, taught at Harvard Law School, and served for two decades in a range of legal capacities at the United States Department of State from 1961 to 1981 while also holding an academic post at Johns Hopkins University. He was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1981 and served until 2000, acting as Vice-President from 1994 to 1997 and as President from 1997 to 2000; over his nineteen years on the bench he took part in thirty eight cases and became known for voting against the position of his own country's government more often than any other judge in the Court's history.
