Carmel Agius

Carmel Agius is a Maltese judge, born August 18, 1945, in Sliema, Malta. He graduated from the University of Malta with an arts degree in 1964, a notary diploma in 1968 and a law doctorate in 1969, was called to the bar in 1970, and practiced civil and commercial law before becoming a magistrate in 1977 and a superior court judge in 1982, later sitting on Malta's court of appeal and constitutional court until his retirement from the Maltese judiciary in 2010. Elected a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 2001, he served until 2017, presiding over the trial of Vujadin Popovic and others over the Srebrenica massacre, joining the appeals chamber in 2010, serving as vice-president from 2011 to 2015 and as the tribunal's final president from 2015 to 2017. Since 2012 he has served as a judge of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, and was its president from 2019 to 2022.
