V. K. Wellington Koo, who lived from 29 January 1888 to 14 November 1985, was a prominent Chinese diplomat born in Shanghai who earned a doctorate in international law and diplomacy from Columbia University. He became Yuan Shikai's secretary for foreign affairs after returning to China in 1912, represented China at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, and went on to serve as Chinese ambassador to the United States, France and Great Britain across different periods, as acting Premier and President of China in the 1920s, and as a founding delegate to the United Nations in 1945. He served as a judge of the International Court of Justice from 1957 to 1967.
