The court traces its institutional lineage to the Permanent Court of International Justice, grouped separately in this subcategory, and its fifteen judges are elected by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council to nine year terms. Because the court has sat continuously since 1946 and its bench has always reflected the world's major regions and legal systems, this group is broken into a second level below it by the same regional grouping the United Nations itself uses in practice to elect the court's own membership: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Europe and Other States.FactsAll International Court of Justice JudgesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonDefining CharacteristicWell-attestedJudges of the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, colloquially the World Court. 1Formation YearWell-attested1945 CE 1All International Court of Justice JudgesFilter Results105 entriesRoleAllDiplomat (1)Diplomat and Judge (1)Diplomat and jurist (4)Diplomat and politician (1)Expert in international law (1)Football official and criminal judge (1)Independence activist, diplomat and jurist (1)International lawyer, diplomat, and judge (1)Judge (8)Judge (Member and President, International Court of Justice) (1)Judge and academic (1)Judge and diplomat (1)Judge and Jurist (2)Judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) (1)Jurist (9)Jurist and diplomat (1)Jurist and international judge, counsel and arbitrator (1)Jurist and judge (1)Jurist and legal scholar (1)Jurist and Magistrate (1)Jurist, diplomat and professor of law (1)Jurist, politician and diplomat (1)Jurist, specialized in private law (1)Law professor (1)Lawyer (2)Lawyer and administrator (1)Lawyer and diplomat (2)Lawyer and judge (1)Lawyer, international legal scholar, former U.S (1)Lawyer, jurist, and writer (1)Lawyer, politician and diplomat (1)Lawyer, writer, politician, and diplomat (1)Legal academic (1)Politician and diplomat (2)Politician and jurist (1)Politician and lawyer (1)Politician from Benin (1)Politician, diplomat, and judge (1)politician, diplomat, jurist, and academic (1)Politician, jurist, and diplomat (1)Professor and legal expert (1)Soviet jurist and legal expert (1)Nationality or JurisdictionAllAlgerian (1)American (5)Argentine (2)Australian (1)Beninese (1)Brazil (1)Brazilian (3)British (1)Canadian (1)Chilean (1)Chinese (3)Croatian (1)Dutch (1)Egyptian (2)Filipino (1)France (1)French (3)German (2)Germany (1)Greek (1)Hungarian (1)India (1)Indian (4)Italian (4)Japanese (2)Jordanian (1)Kenya (1)Lebanese (2)Malagasy (1)Mexican (3)New Zealand (1)Nigerian (3)Norwegian (2)Pakistani (1)Panamanian (1)Peruvian (1)Polish (2)Romania (1)Russian (3)Senegalese (1)Sierra Leonean (1)Slovakia (1)Somalia (1)South Africa (1)Soviet (1)Spanish (1)Sri Lankan (1)Syrian (1)United States (2)Uruguayan (2)Venezuelan (1)Legal SystemAllAustralian Law (2)French Legal System (5)German Legal System (3)Indian Legal System (5)Japanese Law (4)Law of Algeria (1)Law of Argentina (2)Law of Benin (1)Law of Brazil (5)Law of Canada (1)Law of Chile (1)Law of Croatia (1)Law of Egypt (2)Law of Greece (1)Law of Hungary (1)Law of Italy (4)Law of Jordan (2)Law of Kenya (1)Law of Lebanon (2)Law of Mexico (5)Law of Nigeria (3)Law of Norway (2)Law of Pakistan (1)Law of Panama (1)Law of Peru (1)Law of Poland (2)Law of Romania (1)Law of Russia (3)Law of Slovakia (1)Law of Somalia (1)Law of Spain (1)Law of Sri Lanka (1)Law of Syria (2)Law of the Netherlands (1)Law of the People's Republic of China (4)Law of the Philippines (1)Law of the Soviet Union (5)Law of the United Kingdom (1)Law of the United States (7)Law of Uruguay (2)Law of Venezuela (2)New Zealand Law (1)Public International Law (4)Scots Law (1)South African Law (1)Field of LawAllCivil / Private Law (3)Commercial and Business Law (1)Common Law (1)Comparative Law (1)Constitutional Law (3)Criminal Law (1)Environmental Law (1)Family Law (2)Human Rights Law (2)International Law (64)Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence (2)GenderAllFemale (6)Male (82)Court Served OnAllDelhi High Court (1)Inter-American Court of Human Rights (1)International Court of Justice (102)Permanent Court of Arbitration (4)Supreme Court of India (1)Supreme Court of Nigeria (1)Supreme Court of Sri Lanka (1)Supreme Court of the Philippines (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 5Vladimir KoretskyInternational and Supranational Court JudgesVladlen VereshchetinInternational and Supranational Court JudgesWellington KooInternational and Supranational Court JudgesXue HanqinInternational and Supranational Court JudgesYuji IwasawaInternational and Supranational Court Judges← Previous12Sources1.
