Thomas Buergenthal was a Czechoslovak-born American jurist who lived from 11 May 1934 to 29 May 2023. Born in Lubochna in what is now Slovakia, he survived the Kielce ghetto and the Auschwitz and Sachsenhausen concentration camps as a child during the Holocaust, an experience he later recounted in his memoir A Lucky Child. He served as President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 1985 to 1987 and as Dean of American University's Washington College of Law from 1980 to 1985, publishing more than a dozen books on international law and human rights, before being elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 2000, a position he held until his resignation in 2010.
