Rosario Salvatore Aitala

Rosario Salvatore Aitala, born 24 September 1967 in Catania, Italy, is an Italian jurist specializing in criminal law who studied at the University of Catania. He began his career as a police officer before working as a judge and prosecutor in Milan, Trapani and Rome for three decades on organized crime, terrorism, corruption and international criminal matters. He was elected a judge of the International Criminal Court on 6 December 2017 with 84 states parties voting in favor, for a term running from 11 March 2018 to 10 March 2027, serving on Pre-Trial Chamber II and becoming its presiding judge in 2021; he became First Vice-President of the Court in March 2024. He has advised Italian foreign ministers and Senate leadership on international matters, coordinated European Union drug trafficking monitoring programs, and taught criminal law and international relations at several Italian universities.
