Christoph Flugge

Christoph Flugge is a German jurist and judge, born July 14, 1947. He served as Secretary of State in Berlin's Department of Justice from 2001 to 2007, and in 2008 was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as a permanent judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, a post he held until 2017. His 2009 remarks to Der Spiegel questioning the use of the term genocide for the Srebrenica massacre drew criticism from genocide scholars and victims' groups and led to his removal from the Radovan Karadzic trial; he was later appointed to the Ratko Mladic case in 2011 over the objections of victims' associations, and he resigned from the tribunal in January 2019, citing political pressure on the court's authority.
