Hans-Peter Kaul, who lived from 25 July 1943 to 21 July 2014, was a German international law scholar, diplomat and lawyer born in Glashutte, Germany. He entered German diplomatic service in 1975, holding posts including press attache in Norway and positions in United Nations affairs and at the German embassies in Tel Aviv and Washington, and from 1996 to 2003 headed Germany's delegation negotiating the Rome Statute, playing an instrumental role in establishing the International Criminal Court and shaping its treatment of the crime of aggression. He served as a judge of the Court from 11 March 2003 until 1 July 2014, as President of the Pre-Trial Division from 2004 to 2009 and again in 2014, and as Second Vice-President from 2009 to 2012, resigning in 2014 for health reasons and dying shortly afterward.
