Tomoko Akane is a Japanese jurist who has served as President of the International Criminal Court since March 2024, elected by the court's judges for the term 2024 to 2027. She began her career as a public prosecutor in Japan in 1982 after graduating from the University of Tokyo, later earning a master's degree in criminal justice from Jacksonville State University in 1990, and served as chief prosecutor of Hakodate from 2010 to 2012 and in posts at the Supreme Public Prosecutors Office, as well as director of the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. Japan nominated her for the International Criminal Court in April 2016, and she was elected a judge of the court on 4 December 2017, taking office in March 2018 as a pre-trial judge before her election to the presidency.
