Nabil Elaraby, who lived from March 15, 1935, to August 26, 2024, was an Egyptian diplomat and jurist who earned his law degree from Cairo University in 1955 and an LL.M. and J.S.D. from New York University School of Law in 1969 and 1971. He served as a judge of the International Court of Justice from 2001 to February 2006, then as Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs from March to June 2011 during the 2011 Egyptian protests, acting as a liaison between protesters and the government and pressing for the removal of President Hosni Mubarak; as foreign minister he also opened the Rafah Border Crossing with Gaza and helped broker Hamas-Fatah reconciliation. He served as the seventh Secretary-General of the Arab League from July 1, 2011, to July 3, 2016.
