Jules Basdevant

Jules Basdevant, who lived from 15 April 1877 to 17 March 1968, was a French legal scholar born in Anost, Saone-et-Loire. After earning his doctorate in law he taught at the universities of Paris, Rennes and Grenoble before returning to Paris as a professor of international law, and he served as a legal consultant to France's Foreign Affairs department. He joined the International Court of Justice in 1946, serving as its first Vice President from 1946 to 1949 and as its President from 1949 to 1952, and remained a judge of the Court until 1964. His daughter, Suzanne Bastid, was also a noted legal scholar.
