Jens Ingebret Evensen, who lived from November 5, 1917, to February 15, 2004, was a Norwegian lawyer, judge and Labour Party politician born in Christiania, now Oslo. He led the legal department of Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1961 to 1973 and developed the legal framework behind Norway's claims to its continental shelf as North Sea oil exploration expanded. He served as Norway's Minister of Trade and Shipping from 1973 to 1974 and as Minister of Maritime Law from 1974 to 1979, and as a member of the International Law Commission he helped shape the 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He was a judge of the International Court of Justice, sitting until 1993.
