Giorgio Gaja, born 12 July 1939 in Lucerne, Switzerland, is an Italian jurist and scholar of international law who earned his law degree from Sapienza University of Rome in 1960. He became a full professor of international law at the University of Florence in 1974 and served as Dean of its law school from 1978 to 1981, has been editor-in-chief of the Rivista di Diritto Internazionale since 1989, and became a member of the Institut de droit international in 1993. He served as a judge of the International Court of Justice from 6 February 2012 to 6 February 2021, and sat as an ad hoc judge in five other ICJ cases.
