Patricia Ann McGowan Wald (September 16, 1928 to January 12, 2019) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1986 to 1991, the first woman to hold that post after being appointed to the court by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. She began her legal career as a law clerk to Judge Jerome Frank, later worked at the firm of Arnold, Fortas and Porter, and served as a U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legislative Affairs starting in 1977. From 1999 to 2001 she served as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
